NASA seems to report things AFTER they happen, like this release on September 15, 2011 concerning sky show seen by US residents in the Southwest. And this final report on where UARS satellite fell - after it fell to Earth.
If you know where to look, you'll get information before it happens, not after. That's especially true while living in Sedona. "Sedona Synchronicity" some call it. In Sedona, you ask a question, the answer usually appears within 24 hours. Especially for curious people like me.
This morning I wondered about asteroids, googled it, and sure enough, NASA's a buzzin' with asteroid & WISE information (Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer). Remember President Obama's April 2010 speech about NASA's new goal to travel or research asteroids? That's WISE. It was President Obama's answer to closing the Shuttle Program. Click here for latest about WISE. Here is coverage of President Obama's speech April 2010.
Reading this NASA article about Thursday's near-earth asteroid collision press conference, reminded me of one of Northern Arizona's most fascinating attractions that gets little recognition: Meteor Crater.
Located just 70 miles north of Sedona, it's the world's largest, best preserved meteor crater site. I visited Meteor Crater almost a year ago. Over 50,000 years ago, an asteroid or meteor hit Mother Earth and a marble-sized pebble from the meteor fell from the sky at 26,000 miles per hour, creating a mile wide hole about 550 deep.
Conflicts among scientists still exist about this crater- the actual size of the pebble that exploded into a huge gaping hold, its subsequent damage to Mother Earth, and whether this event will be repeated again on Earth. Some say it caused an ELE (Extinction Level Event), responsible for extinction of Dinosaurs & other mammals; while other scientists claim it had no adverse effect on Earth at all. Remind anyone else of the Climate Change arguments? Some say potato, some say potahto.
Strangely, NASA recently released an article about asteroids & the dinosaur extinction (ELE) on September 19, 2011. Click here. Sedona Synchronicity.
NASA's press conference on Thursday should not be a big surprise. It has been studying near-earth asteroid-meteor-space object collisions for several few years, mostly without any national press coverage, until Obama's speech in 2010, the closure of the Space Shuttle program resulting in thousands of layoffs and NASA's shipments of Space Shuttles across the US which caught the attention of many US Congressmen.
What fascinates me about NASA's Thursday press conference are these three things:
(1) The timing of the presser about near-earth asteroid collision-projections after NASA's inability to locate (UARS) climate change satellite this past weekend;
(2) President Obama's 2010 NASA asteroid speech which eerily sounded like a scene from "Deep Impact" or "Armageddon" - creating fear.
(3) This current list of PHAs (Potentially Hazardous Asteroids) which was quickly updated this morning. (PHAs = objects which come within the Moon's distance from Earth). Recent list reveals PHAs have been hitting earth this entire year w/o an ELE.
My fascination lies in how conflicted these three issues are - just like conflicts over Climate Change (Global Warming) and scientists' conflicts over the asteroid-meteor back 50,000 years ago.
Some PHAs already occurred without any press coverage. So just in case NASA's press conference gets national press play creating more fear, here is a list of close encounters this year that we never heard about nor caused any harm - including the climate change satellite that went down off US Pacific Coast. These PHAs moved dangerously close to Earth, some equidistant to the Moon.

Living in an area full of unexplained mysteries does bring out the inquisitive side of me. Sedona's home to many unexplained phenomenon: Majestic Red Rock healing energies cited by ancient cultures (vortex); constant UFO sightings by locals & tourists; mysterious presence of Iron-rich soil in the middle of desertlands which colors Sedona's rocks red. The unexplained is commonplace here. If you have a curious mind like me, it's a great place to expand your knowledge of the world. Every day I learn new things about the world we live in, usually by pure accident with only a sense of curiosity as a guide. Sedona Synchronicity
